Ingredients for Balkan Moussaka Recipe with Chicken

For Moussaka:

  • 4 medium sized potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 4 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon of chili pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 3 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 boiled chicken breast

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons of oil
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 glass of water Milk
  • 1 cup of yoghurt
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of salt

How to Make Balkan Moussaka Recipe with Chicken?

  • Chop the onions and potatoes into small cubes. Also slice the garlic thinly.
  • Put oil in an ovenproof pan or tray and put it on the stove. First add onion, garlic and salt to the pan and sauté. Then add the potatoes and continue roasting.
  • When the onions start to take color, add the spices and tomato puree and continue cooking for two minutes. Chop the chicken into cubes and add it at this stage.
  • Finally, add enough chicken broth to reach the level of the potatoes. If chicken broth is not enough at this stage, you can also add water. If you roasted the mixture in a pot, you can put it on a baking tray at this stage.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes until the potatoes become soft.
  • While your food is in the oven, roast the oil and flour in a pan or small saucepan and let it cool. Add milk to the cooled flour and mix until smooth. Finally, add yoghurt, egg and salt and get the sauce ready.
  • Pour the sauce over the dish in the oven and continue baking for another 20 minutes until golden brown. You can slice the food right out of the oven and serve it hot. Enjoy your meal.
